NEED TO KNOW

  • A limited series about Karen Read’s trial for the murder of her boyfriend is coming to Prime Video
  • Elizabeth Banks will star in the series, according to reports, with Justin Noble and David E. Kelley on board as well
  • Read was acquitted in June, three years after her boyfriend, Boston police officer John O’Keefe, was found dead outside a friend’s house

The fascinating story of Karen Read is coming to the small screen.

Prime Video has greenlit a limited series about the infamous trial, which saw Read initially charged with second-degree murder in the death of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in 2022, before she was eventually acquitted of the murder charges after a second trial following an initial mistrial due to a deadlocked jury.

Elizabeth Banks will take on Read’s complicated story for the limited series, Deadline reported.

Sex Lives of College Girls alum Justin Noble will reportedly showrun and executive produce, alongside David E. Kelley.

The series will explore how Read became a household name after the death of her boyfriend, who was 46.

Per Deadline, the series will be based on the Law & Crime and Wondery podcast, Karen.

PEOPLE has reached out to Prime Video for confirmation.

Read’s infamy began after O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, was found unresponsive in the snow outside a gathering at the home of another police officer in the early hours of Jan. 29, 2022. An autopsy revealed that he died from blunt force trauma and hypothermia, and she was accused of drunkenly backing into him with her vehicle during a winter storm. She repeatedly pled not guilty.

Karen Read looks toward her defense attorney Robert Alessi, as special prosecutor Hank Brennan questions Ian Whiffin, a digital intelligence expert with Celebrite, about the data on John O'Keefe's iPhone. The murder retrial of Karen Read continues in Norfolk Superior Court in front of Judge Beverly J. Cannone on April 28, 2025.

Read was acquitted in June of this year, and she said to her supporters outside the courtroom after the verdict: “I would not be standing here without these amazing supporters who have supported me and my team financially and more importantly, emotionally.”

“No one has fought harder for justice for John O’Keefe than I have — and my team,” she said.

Though she was found not guilty of second-degree murder, the most serious charge, nor of manslaughter while operating under the influence, involuntary manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide, and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, Read was found guilty of operating under the influence.

The limited series comes after Banks starred in another recent hit Prime Video series, The Better Sister

Banks, 51, and Jessica Biel played estranged sisters in the series, which premiered on the streamer in May, and was adapted from Alafair Burke’s 2019 novel of the same name.

The Better Sister also explored a high-profile murder case, though a fictional one, where Biel and Banks’ onscreen son, a teenager, was wrongly accused of killing his father (Corey Stoll) — Banks’ character’s ex-husband, to whom Biel’s character was later married.
