NEED TO KNOW

  • Mingus Reedus had his first appearance in court virtually on Tuesday, Aug. 26
  • The appearance comes after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a 33-year-old woman in New York City
  • He has pleaded not guilty to the five charges made against him

Mingus Reedus, son of Norman Reedus and Helena Christensen, made his first appearance in court virtually on Tuesday, Aug. 26, following his arrest for alleged assault.

According to the New York Daily News, during his appearance, Mingus, 25, discussed with Judge Michelle Weber the terms of extending the temporary order of protection that was issued at his arraignment.

Under the temporary order of protection, Mingus is restricted from contacting the 33-year-old woman he allegedly assaulted on Saturday, Aug. 23, per the Daily News.

During Tuesday’s court session, in which Mingus’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, was present, the judge also told Mingus that he must leave immediately if he sees the woman he allegedly assaulted at the apartment building where they had lived, per Us Weekly.

According to online records reviewed by PEOPLE, Mingus is expected to appear in court again on Wednesday, October 8. PEOPLE reached out to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and Chaudhry for comment.

Mingus was initially charged with one count of assault and one count of criminal obstruction of breathing, per the NYPD. He was later charged with three additional counts: assault – recklessly causing physical injury, aggravated harassment and harassment, New York Criminal Court public records reviewed by PEOPLE show.

He has pleaded not guilty to all five counts, per public records.

Chaudhry previously told PEOPLE in an emailed statement that her client’s “innocence will become clear” as “the facts emerge.”

“Despite what the prosecutor said in court — which is not evidence — they [the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office] chose to charge Mingus with misdemeanors or less. This speaks volumes, and much louder than the unsupported prosecutor’s in-court comments,” she said.

“Equally important, the judge released Mingus on his own recognizance, with neither bail nor supervision. That significant judicial decision amplifies the volume. Mingus is presumed innocent and has pled not guilty,” her statement continued.
