Lil Nas X has entered a not guilty plea after facing four felony charges in light of his Aug. 21 arrest.
On Monday, Aug. 25, the “Industry Baby” singer — who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer last week — waived his arraignment and pleaded not guilty to three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office confirms to PEOPLE.
The judge has set his bail at $75,000 and is requiring Lil Nas X, born Montero Hill, to attend four Narcotics Anonymous meetings per week. Police have said they believe the rapper was under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest, but the Associated Press reports Nas’ attorney, Christy O’Connor, said it was too early to tell as test results have not yet come back. She went on to call the incident “an absolute aberration in his life. Nothing like this has ever happened to him.”
Another attorney on Nas’ team, Drew Findling, spoke to reporters outside the courthouse following the hearing and said he expects the rapper to make bail and be released on Monday.
“He’s never been in trouble for a split second in his existence, we’re not going to let one little event change the trajectory of his amazing life,” Findling told reporters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s no way to have a sense of what happened this immediately, but we’re going to look into it and do the right thing.”
He continued, “Anybody that has kids, you hear about things like this all the time. Don’t forget, he’s 26 years old. It’s not unusual for something like this to happen, particularly when you have the pressure of being recognized internationally like him.”
Lil Nas X’s father Robert Stafford also briefly spoke to reporters, telling them the rapper is “doing great mentally” before asking that his son be kept in everyone’s prayers.
Lil Nas X is due back in court Sept. 15 for another pre-trial hearing.
A rep for the “That’s What I Want” artist did not return PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The rapper and singer appeared before a judge on Monday morning, TMZ reports, and per California penal code, convictions of felony battery on a police officer and resisting executive officer can see jail time of up to three years, as well as a $10,000 fine, for each charge.
On Thursday, Aug. 21, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that officers responded to reports of a man “nude in the street” on Ventura Blvd just before 6 a.m.
PEOPLE confirmed that the suspect was the “Old Town Road” musician and that he went on to allegedly “batter an officer, so he was booked for battery on a [peace officer],” the spokesperson said at the time.
Lil Nas X was taken to the hospital for treatment following the arrest and has since been discharged and put through the booking process, PEOPLE confirmed.
According to the booking report, the hitmaker was booked on the misdemeanor charge around 11:22 a.m. on Aug. 21.
TMZ published photos that appeared to show Lil Nas X walking down Ventura Blvd. in only underwear and boots around 4 a.m., hours after the arrest.
Per the outlet, multiple calls were made to law enforcement to report a possible overdose; however, the spokesperson was unable to confirm at the time.
