NEED TO KNOW

  • A pregnant woman and her partner were found murdered inside their home in Melbourne, Australia on Monday, Aug. 11
  • Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was five months pregnant, while her partner Andrew Gunn, 50, was found decapitated
  • A suspect was arrested at a nearby train station hours after police first responded to the home

Gruesome new details are beginning to emerge about a pregnant Australian woman who was found dead inside her home late Monday night alongside her partner, whose body was maimed.

Athena Georgopoulos and her partner Andrew Gunn were found brutally murdered inside their home in Melbourne, Australia on Monday, Aug. 11, according to news.com.au and The Age.

Georgopoulos, 39, was five months pregnant at the time of her killing, per the outlets. Gunn, 50, was reportedly found decapitated with his head on a spike inside the home, which was covered in graffiti.

Local police are still investigating to determine if there’s a connection with the couple’s murders, news.com.au reported.

About four hours after police first responded to the couple’s home, an unhoused 34-year-old man was arrested at a train station roughly four miles away with blood still on his shirt. The suspect was charged with two counts of murder, according to The Age.

Police told members of the media gathered outside the home late Monday night that the murder suspect appeared to have been known to the couple — though authorities have not described the nature of their relationship.

“The message here is that it appears to be a targeted attack,” local homicide detective Dean Thomas said, according to The Age. “Our suspect is known to the address.”

The news outlets reported that a range of graffiti was found sprayed on the outside walls of the home, some of which were captured by overhead news cameras.

“Karma is not a menu” read one message. “Meat is murder,” read another. Another spray painted message said, “Enough is Enough,” while another reportedly read ““betrayal, unpredictable, inevitable,” according to news.com.au.

“Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation,” a police spokesperson told the outlet.

Georgopoulos’ aunt Petty Dilveridis was reportedly spotted at the crime scene distraught and trying to get past police tape into her niece’s home, according to the outlets. She was later seen crying and sitting on a curb outside.

Dilveridis told The Herald Sun that Athena was excited about being pregnant and never thought she’d become a mother due to her age.

“She was so looking forward to having a baby, because she was 39 [and] she never thought she could have one,” the victim’s aunt said.
