  • An LSU football player reportedly turned himself in to campus police on Aug. 8 after a warrant was issued for his arrest
  • Police issued the warrant for his arrest, charging him with two felony counts of being an accessory after the fact to second-degree murder
  • The player’s attorney maintains he was not aware two friends staying in his dorm for several weeks were wanted for murder

A Louisiana State University football player turned himself in to campus police on Friday, Aug. 8, after a warrant was issued for his arrest regarding two murder suspects who allegedly stayed in his dorm while on the run from police.

Running back JT Lindsey turned himself in to university police on Friday morning and has since been suspended from the LSU football team, according to ABC affiliate WBRZ, CBS affiliate WAFB and CBS Sports.

WAFB reported that the two murder suspects — 17-year-old Shemell Jacobs and 18-year-old Keldrick Jordan — were arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service Monday, Aug. 4, at an LSU campus dorm room.

Jacobs and Jordan have been wanted by police in connection with the alleged murder of a 17-year-old boy in Alexandria, La., in May.

An attorney for Lindsey, Kris Perret, said in a statement to WBRZ that the LSU freshman running back was not aware Jacobs and Jordan were murder suspects while they were staying at his apartment. PEOPLE reached out to Perret for comment but did not immediately receive a response on Monday, Aug. 11.

A spokesperson for the LSU football team told PEOPLE that Lindsey is “currently suspended from team activities.”

“We are aware and won’t have any comment out of respect for the legal process,” the team’s spokesperson said.

CBS Sports reported that the U.S. Marshals Service alleged officers discovered several weapons inside the dorm where Jacobs and Jordan were arrested, including two AR-15 rifles, a Draco and a Glock.

In a statement to WBRZ, Lindsey’s defense attorney said the football player “is adamant that he is innocent of any alleged criminal misconduct and any allegations of wrongdoing against him,” and that he was “unaware that the individuals arrested had committed any crimes, or that they had been accused of any crimes, or that they were wanted by the police for questioning when he allowed them to stay at his apartment.”

An arrest warrant published by WAFB alleges that Lindsey was aware his friends were wanted for murder. The warrant alleges Lindsey had “knowingly harbored and aided Jacobs and Jordan.”

Lindsey has been charged with two felony counts of being an accessory after the fact to second-degree murder, according to the warrant published by WAFB.

The freshman is one of the top running back recruits in the country, according to the recruiting website 247 Sports, which names him the No. 4 freshman recruit from Louisiana and No. 7 overall running back recruit in the country.
