An active shooting incident has taken place at Emory University in Atlanta, a campus police spokesperson confirms to PEOPLE.
At around 5 p.m., Emory University issued an alert warning of an “active shooter” at the CVS on campus, urging people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and avoid the area.
In a separate message at 5:30 p.m., the Atlanta Police Department said its officers were responding to reports of an active shooter near 1760 Clifton Road in Atlanta.
About a mile away from campus is the headquarters of the CDC, which was also placed on lockdown after an email was sent to staff advising them to get to safety.
One police officer was injured in the shooting and taken to a nearby hospital, per Atlanta police. They said the incident involved a single shooter, who is now deceased.
“There is no ongoing threat to the Emory campus or the surrounding neighborhood,” the Department wrote on X, adding that they will “provide updates as more information becomes available.”
The campus lifted its shelter in place order at 6:34 p.m. while still urging people to avoid the area.
According to FOX 5 Atlanta, police are investigating multiple scenes they believe are involved in the shooting. Bullet holes reportedly riddled the windows of the CDC but it is unclear at this time if the building was a target, per the outlet.
“Multiple rounds were fired, both we believe at law enforcement and potentially at the CDC,” said Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum at a press conference Friday night.
Schierbaum confirmed the CDC “did receive multiple rounds into their buildings” but investigators are looking into whether those rounds were fired purposefully.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
