NEED TO KNOW

  • Erik Menendez underwent two surgeries, his wife and stepdaughter shared on social media
  • His lawyer previously told TMZ that he had a “serious” medical diagnosis and called for his release
  • Erik, along with his brother Lyle Menendez, are scheduled for a hearing next month that will determine whether they will be released

Family members of Erik Menendez are sharing what sent him to the hospital in what his lawyer told TMZ was a condition so “serious” it warranted his immediate release.

Erik’s attorney Mark Geragos declined to comment further, citing HIPAA regulations and attorney-client privilege, but told the outlet in an interview published Tuesday, July 22: “I think if there was ever anybody who should be furloughed, especially right now, a month before the hearing, it’s Eric.”

Menendez’s stepdaughter Talia Menendez revealed on social media what sent him to the hospital.

“Today Erik had his second surgery due to complications with both kidneys having multiple large stones,” read part of the post Talia shared on her Instagram story on Wednesday.

She added that he will need a third surgery, but did not provide further details.

“He’s currently in pain and feeling nauseous, but is recovering,” she wrote on the Instagram account @seterikmenendezfree, where she advocates for Erik and his brother Lyle Menendez.

Erik’s wife Tammi Menendez also shared an update on X.

“This surgery was successful,” she wrote, later adding: “Because Erik is in prison there are a lot of complications and delays with surgery.”

The Surprising Reason Why the Menendez Brothers Went on a $700K Shopping Spree After Murdering Their Parents

Erik’s medical emergency comes as he and Lyle continue efforts to be released from their life sentences for the 1989 murders of their parents, José and Kitty Menendez.

The brothers, who claimed they had been sexually abused by José for years leading up to the murders, were convicted of first-degree murder.

In October 2024, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón said he was reviewing new evidence as he determines whether the brothers should be resentenced.

In May, a judge resentenced the brothers to 50 years to life in prison, which immediately makes them eligible for parole.

Earlier this month, a judge found there was sufficient reason to potentially overturn the convictions — and gave prosecutors a deadline to argue why the case should not be dismissed.

Their parole hearing is scheduled for August.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual abuse, text “STRENGTH” to the Crisis Text Line at 741-741 to be connected to a certified crisis counselor.
