A man accused of intentionally driving his car through a crowd outside of a Los Angeles club last weekend has been charged with 37 counts of attempted murder, authorities announced this week.
On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced the official charges against Fernando Ramirez, who was arrested last Saturday after officials claim he intentionally drove his car through a crowd of people gathered outside The Vermont music venue in Los Angeles around 2 a.m. local time.
L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Ramirez, 29, would also face 37 counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The number of charges – 37 – relates to the number of victims, according to Hochman, who alleged that Ramirez injured dozens when he rammed through the crowd. Some victims were critically injured, according to the official.
Patients were transported to local hospitals with injuries ranging from minor abrasions to serious fractures and lacerations to broken bones, officials said.
“The defendant’s brazen and destructive actions, as alleged in the criminal complaint, have caused unimaginable harm to dozens of innocent people,” Hochman said in a press release announcing the charges. “This is a heinous act that left dozens injured, and while the allegations will be tested in court, the impact on the victims is undeniable. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones as they begin the long road to recovery.”

Authorities alleged that on the night of the incident, Ramirez was out on bail from another unrelated criminal case having to do with a domestic violence charge in Orange County.
Ramirez is now being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday. The San Clemente, Calif., native faces multiple life sentences in state prison if he’s convicted, authorities announced.
