Police have released bodycam footage from the arrest of an Oklahoma pediatrician accused of murdering her young daughter — and then trying to make it appear that she had drowned.
Dr. Neha Gupta, 36, is charged with first-degree murder in Florida in connection with the death of her daughter Aria Talathi, 4. She was arrested in Oklahoma City on July 1 and has been extradited to face charges in Miami-Dade County, Fla., where she is being held without bond. She has pleaded not guilty.
Police allege that early on the morning of June 27, Gupta called 911 from a short-term rental on NW 90th Street in El Portal — about 7 miles north of downtown Miami — to report that her child was drowning in the pool. Responding officers found the 4-year-old unresponsive in the pool and transported her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
But water was not found in Aria’s lungs, which would be expected in drownings. Also, doctors found cuts in her mouth and bruising in the girl’s cheeks, according to her June 29 autopsy.
By “investigative means and consultation with the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office,” police say they obtained an arrest warrant on murder charges for Gupta, and she was arrested at her home in Oklahoma City on July 1.

Oklahoma City police on Wednesday released dramatic bodycam footage from the arrest, showing police and U.S. Marshals bust down the door to Gupta’s home after she doesn’t answer to authorities yelling her name and demanding she come to the front door to be arrested.
Guns drawn, multiple officers moved through the house until eventually finding Gupta hiding in her laundry room. At that point she is forced out of the room and onto her knees, where officers place her in handcuffs.
Reached for comment, Gupta’s attorney Richard L. Cooper tells PEOPLE the pediatrician hid because she believed someone had broken into her home and was on the phone with 911 at the time she was cuffed. He called the arrest “extremely violent” for someone who was otherwise cooperative and showed “no indication that she’s a danger to anyone in the community.”
Cooper previously told CBS Miami the warrant for Gupta’s arrest was “flimsy.” Gupta is currently in the midst of a contentious divorce and custody battle with her ex-husband, PEOPLE previously reported.
“Remember in a day, she was converted from grieving mother figure to murder suspect by the police,” Cooper said in a text message to PEOPLE. “I truly don’t think she ever saw this coming.”
Oklahoma City Police spokesperson MSgt. Gary Knight disputed the contention the arrest was violent.
“I have watched the video, but I never saw a violent arrest,” said Knight. “We certainly had a show of force, just as we would with any murder suspect who was locked in their home, refusing to come out. But as for the arrest itself, she was simply placed on the ground and handcuffed.”
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office did not return an inquiry for comment from PEOPLE.
Gupta is due back in court for a hearing on Aug. 7.
