Several shootings have taken place near Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, according to local authorities and reports.
Kentucky State Police confirmed to PEOPLE that “a trooper-involved shooting” occurred on Sunday, July 13, at 11:36 a.m. local time in Fayette County, where the airport is located.
“The suspect shot a trooper and then fled the scene, ending up at the Richmond Road Baptist Church, at which time KSP and Lexington Police Department were able to secure the suspect,” Sherry Bray, agency spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police (KSP), said in a statement to PEOPLE, adding that “the suspect is deceased.”
Bray also said that there were “multiple victims at the church” and that emergency medical services were “on the scene providing care.”
The injured trooper is also receiving medical attention.
In a statement shared to Facebook, the Lexington Police stated that “officers are currently on the scene of an active investigation in the 5800 block of Old Richmond Road,” where the church is located.
Lexington Police said they had temporarily closed several surrounding roads “for the safety of the surrounding community.”
The Lexington Fire Department dispatched crews to 4000 Terminal Drive after receiving reports of the initial shooting near the aiport, per local news outlets WKYT and NBC affiliate LEX 18.
It is currently unclear if the initial incident occurred inside the Blue Grass Airport or in the surrounding area.
PEOPLE reached out to the Lexington Fire Department, the Lexington Police and the Blue Grass Airport on July 13, but did not receive immediate responses.
