Authorities Are Searching for a Missing Woman Whose Boyfriend Is Person of Interest – and a Body Was Just Found 

Police in California have discovered a body in a park just three-and-a-half miles away from where a missing woman was last seen.

The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office said they found a body under a bridge near Anderson Lake County Park, where missing 18-year-old Marissa DiNapoli was last seen, but it wasn’t clear if it was her or not, NBC Bay Area reported, citing authorities.

“Due to the condition of the body, we were unable to make an identification,” Morgan Hill police told the outlet. “We will need to wait for the results of the medical examination before we can provide any further information.”

Police told NBC Bay Area that it was DiNapoli’s family who discovered the body. They had been searching for her in various places throughout the day. 

DiNapoli’s family last heard from her via text message on June 28 at 9:16 p.m. when she told family members that she was staying with a friend for the evening and would return home the next day, according to a statement from the Morgan Hill Police Department.

When DiNapoli didn’t return home or respond to calls from her family, she was reported missing, the police statement said. 

DiNapoli was last seen on June 29 at 9:45 a.m. with Martin Mendoza, 21, her boyfriend and a person of interest in her disappearance, according to the Morgan Hill Police Department. They were seen leaving a home just outside of Morgan Hill, where DiNapoli’s car was later located. 

On Sunday morning, surveillance video caught DiNapoli and Mendoza leaving a house when he asked “Why would you text your ex?” according to reporting from The Morgan Hill Times. 

Jaslyn Gutierrez, DiNapoli’s best friend, told NBC Bay Area that she was afraid of what Mendoza could do to DiNapoli. 

“Marissa has told me, firsthand in the car with my friends outside of my house, that he would kill her, that he would not stop, that he’s obsessed with her, that he’s crazy and that he’s willing to go to that extent,” Gutierrez said to the outlet.

Friends of DiNapoli’s told NBC Bay Area that Anderson Lake was one of the places where Mendoza frequently took her. 

Earlier in the day, a family member told the outlet that they got in contact with Mendoza. “He tried to say he wasn’t Martin and then followed that with he hasn’t spoken to her for two weeks. But there’s a positive video of him being there on the 29th with her and leaving with her,” family friend Serina Soque said.
