NEED TO KNOW

  • The abandoned luggage of traveler Shauna Eburne, 54, was allegedly found to contain around $120,000 worth of cannabis, according to reports
  • The discovery was reportedly made at Glasgow Airport in Scotland on Feb. 25, after the suspect flew in from Toronto
  • She pleaded guilty to importing drugs into the U.K.

A woman who reported her bag lost at the airport has reportedly been convicted of using it to smuggle £89,000 ($120,159) worth of cannabis into Scotland.

Shauna Eburne, 54, landed at Glasgow Airport after flying in from Toronto via Iceland on Feb. 25. She forgot her suitcase as she left the airport in a taxi to Glasgow City Centre and later returned to the airport to report it missing, Glasgow Live and the Daily Record reported.

By the time Eburne reached the airport, the authorities had already discovered that the abandoned luggage allegedly contained suspicious contents inside, according to the outlets.

“Around 2:00 p.m., Border Force officers on duty were carrying out routine checks on people and their luggage as they entered customs when they noted a suitcase which appeared to have been abandoned bearing a baggage label in the name of Eburne and referring to the Iceland flight which had recently landed,” Procurator Fiscal depute Michael Cunningham told Paisley Sheriff Court, according to Glasgow Live,

“The suitcase was x-rayed which revealed an abnormality within the luggage,” Cunningham added. “Officers opened the suitcase and saw a large quantity of vacuum-sealed packages, each of which contained a green substance.”

“A total of 45 packages were counted each containing the green herbal substance which later tested positive for cannabis.”

Eburne reported her luggage missing at around 4:00 p.m. local time at the ticket desk at Glasgow Airport, per Glasgow Live. Border Force officers were then informed of this and met Eburne at the ticket desk. She was arrested on suspicion of being involved in the importation of controlled drugs, the outlet added.

The amount of cannabis allegedly found in the abandoned luggage weighed approximately 51.72 Lbs., according to the Daily Record.

“I had no idea what was in the suitcase,” Eburne reportedly told police following her arrest, “I had no idea, I was just told to pick it up.”

Despite this, she appeared in court the following day and pleaded guilty to “possession of a quantity of Cannabis” and “the supply of a controlled drug” at Glasgow Airport,” PEOPLE confirmed on Wednesday, May 28.

Cunnigham reportedly told the court that the taxi driver who transported Eburne earlier in the day said, “She remained in the taxi and returned to the airport only to leave again and then travel back towards Glasgow before once again returning to the airport. On that occasion, she left the taxi to report her baggage lost.”

Eburne is being held at Greenock prison on the outskirts of Glasgow, the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service confirmed to PEOPLE. She will be sentenced on June 30.

PEOPLE has reached out to Paisley Sheriff Court and Glasgow Airport for comment.
