NEED TO KNOW

Bailei Singleton, 8, was shot in the head in the living room of home in Southfield in 2021

Authorities said her brother Gyasi Stribling shot her after she talked back to him

Stribling, 24, was found guilty of first degree murder and a felony firearm charge in April

A Michigan man was sentenced to 40 to 60 years in prison for his first-degree murder conviction on Tuesday, May 27, after he fatally shot his 8-year-old sister for “talking back” to him.

Gyasi Stribling, 24, also received an additional two years for a felony firearm charge in connection with the death of Bailei Singleton.

Bailei was shot in the head in the living room of their home in Southfield in January 2021, according to Fox 2. Stribling initially told police that his sister was shot during a break in, authorities said, per Fox 2. He also attempted to hide the murder weapon, police said, Fox 2 reported.

“Bailei Singleton should still be here with us today,” Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said after he was found guilty in April.

“Her murder was a tragedy for her family,” McDonald added. “It’s unconscionable that anyone, let alone an 8-year-old child, could be murdered by a relative and in their own home over the slightest of disagreements. This case is, unfortunately, a reminder of how gun violence is a public health epidemic that can end a life in an instant.”
