NEED TO KNOW

  • Two New York Knicks fans were stabbed during an altercation at a brewery in Indiana
  • The Knicks are currently playing the Indiana Pacers in the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals
  • The suspect allegedly told police the Knicks fans were “talking sh–” before an altercation broke out prior to the stabbing

A 24-year-old Indiana man is facing multiple felony charges after police allege he stabbed two New York Knicks fans at a local brewery who were “talking sh—” during the team’s NBA Playoff game against the Indiana Pacers on Friday night.

The alleged incident happened shortly before 11 p.m. last Friday night, May 23, at a local brewery in Carmel, Ind., according to police. The Carmel Police Department said in a Facebook post that its officers “responded to a disturbance” at the local business and found two people injured from a stabbing when they arrived.

“One male sustained a stab wound to the back and was transported to a local hospital,” the Carmel Police Department said. “A second male suffered a stab wound to the lower leg and later sought medical attention on his own.”

A spokesperson with the Carmel Police Department told PEOPLE the man arrested at the scene was Jarrett Funke.

Hamilton County court records reviewed by PEOPLE show that Funke appeared in court on Tuesday and has been charged with three felonies, including battery by means of a deadly weapon, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and criminal recklessness committed with a deadly weapon. Funke also faces a misdemeanor battery charge, court records show.

The two stabbing victims told police that Funke approached them while they were at the bar and said the 24-year-old “smacked” a Knicks hat off of one of their heads, Fox 59 reported, citing a police report. Funke was then removed from the bar while yelling at the two victims, “f— you, you still have a f—— problem. Take this outside,” according to the outlet.

Fox 59 reports that, according to the police report, the Knicks fans went out onto the bar patio around five minutes later and were confronted again by Funke, who allegedly “stormed through the fence” and attacked them.

One of the victims told police that they flashed a pocket knife at Funke in order to try and persuade him to back off but then decided to put the weapon away because they didn’t intend to use it, according to Fox 59. The outlet reported that Funke told police the Knicks fans were “talking sh—” to him and allegedly began the altercation when they pushed him over and “began punching him in the face.”

Funke then told police that he grabbed his own pocket knife and swung it at one of the Knicks fans during the altercation, Fox 59 reported, citing police documents.

The Indiana Pacers defeated the Knicks 114-109 shortly before the incident occurred. The Pacers currently hold a 2-1 series lead over the Knicks in the NBA Eastern Conference Finals.
