Sean “Diddy” Combs’ once allegedly took his then-girlfriend Casandra “Cassie” Ventura’s phone in a fit of jealousy when he suspected she had danced with Chris Brown.
Combs’ defense lawyer made the claim in a Manhattan courtroom on Friday, May 16, during cross-examining Ventura, who is the prosecution’s star witness in the hip hop mogul’s sex crimes trial.
Ventura appeared in court for the fourth day in a row, wrapping up a week where she recounted harrowing details of alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of Combs during their on-again, off-again relationship that lasted over a decade.
During cross-examination on Friday, Combs’ attorney Anna Estevao asked Ventura if she remembered Combs taking her phone in 2013 after he suspected her of dancing with singer Chris Brown in the street.
Ventura said she didn’t remember much of the incident “besides the fact that I wasn’t dancing with Chris Brown,” she said in a half-laugh.
When Estevao pulled up text exchanges pertaining to the incident for only her to see, Ventura said she still doesn’t remember the exact details except that Combs took her phone out of “jealousy.”
Brown himself is also currently facing legal troubles after being arrested in the United Kingdom and charged with grievous bodily harm this week over an alleged 2023 assault at a London nightclub. He is being held without bail.
Ventura made similar allegations earlier in the week, claiming Combs threatened to harm other men he believed she was involved with: on one occasion, when he found out she was dating rapper Kid Cudi, Combs allegedly threatened to blow up his car, she said.
“If I was with anyone else besides him,” Ventura reiterated on Friday, he would get “upset.”
She recounted a 2016 incident when Combs allegedly took her phone upon finding out she was dating an NFL player, at a time her and Combs were not together and were “not in a great place.”
The two were in a car headed to a doctor’s appointment when Ventura unlocked her phone, she told the court, and Combs allegedly grabbed it and ran out of the car.
“He was trying to get in it and read my phone,” Ventura testified.
She got her phone a few hours later and alleged that Combs called the NFL player during the time he had Ventura’s phone.
