Tonight marks the release of the fifth non-culinary fixed blade release from Vosteed, the Marmoset. The Marmoset is the first entry into the everyday carry fixed blade category from the increasingly productive company.

In the blizzard of releases from this youngish company, it’s easy to forget that Vosteed actually got its start with a fixed blade, albeit one of a culinary bent. In fact, while we here at KnifeNews have mostly focused on the utility-type releases from Vosteed, that first kitchen knife has been joined by no less than ten additional food prep pieces. However, the company’s been hitting the enthusiast, carry-type pieces hard lately, so it’s no surprise that the Marmoset is designed for the streets rather than the cutting board.

In hitting that EDC fixed blade designation, Vosteed drew up the Marmoset with a compact blade, but designed it in such a way to maximize the cutting power. So there is 2.2-inch cleaver blade that is tall and stout, with jimping across the entirety of its spine to secure the hand in push cuts, detail cutting, and regular good ol’ fashioned “hand on the handle” work too. 14C28N makes another appearance in the Vosteed lineup here, for consistent, predictable performance and easy workability when it comes time to sharpen.

Of course, one of the major advantages of fixed blades of any size is that the handle, which doesn’t need to accomodate a folding blade, can generally be larger and comfier; this is especially noticeable when comparing an EDC fixie to an EDC folder, and one of the Marmoset’s prominent features is a full-size handle, with a deep finger groove under the guard, Micarta scales, and additionally jimping around the butt end to facilitate a safe and secure reverse grip should the need arise. In terms of carry, the Marmoset comes with a kydex sheath that has a pocket clip attachment, so the carry situation does not have to be radically different from that of a folding knife.

The Marmoset will be added to Vosteed’s site tonight, Monday May 12th, at 10pm EST.
