  • Karen Read is accused of murdering her boyfriend, John O’Keefe
  • Jurors heard the angry voicemails Read left for O’Keefe in the early morning hours, before he was found dead
  • Read’s first trial ended in a mistrial

Karen Read dropped off her boyfriend John O’Keefe at his friends’ house in Canton, Mass., on a snowy night in January 2022 — and when he failed to return her calls or text her back, she got mad.

“You are f—ing using me right now,” Read told O’Keefe in one of many accusatory voicemails she left for him after a night of drinking, Boston 25 News reports. “You’re f—ing another girl!”

In another, she says “John, I’m here with your f—ing kids, nobody knows where the f— you are, you f—ing pervert.”

Frustrated that O’Keefe was not answering her, she left another voicemail saying, “I f—ing hate you,” CBS News reports.

The dozens of angry and emotional voicemails that Read left for O’Keefe on Jan. 29, 2022, between 12:33 a.m. and 6:03 a.m. were played for jurors on Tuesday, May 6, the tenth day of her highly-publicized murder retrial.

Read, 45, of Mansfield, is on trial for allegedly backing into O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, in front of the home of Brian Albert, a retired Boston police officer, and leaving him to die in the snow, prosecutors claim.

She is charged with second-degree murder, vehicular manslaughter while operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of a collision causing death.

Karen Read Says She ‘Collapsed on the Floor’ and Didn’t ‘Want to Be Alive’ After Learning of Boyfriend’s Death

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and has maintained her innocence since she was arrested in 2022.

Her attorneys argue that she was the victim of a conspiracy to blame her for O’Keefe’s death when they say he was fatally attacked at the party and left unresponsive in the front yard.

The case is being retried after the jury was unable to come to a unanimous verdict last year.

Karen Read Is on Trial Again in Death of Boyfriend — and Disgraced Trooper Who Sent Vulgar Texts Will Testify

On Tuesday, May 6,  Massachusetts State Police Trooper Nicholas Guarino testified that Read connected to O’Keefe’s home WiFi at 12:36 a.m.

Read continued to call and text O’Keefe until she fell asleep. The next morning, with O’Keefe still not home, Read could be heard sounding panicked in the background of a phone call placed by O’Keefe’s niece to Jennifer McCabe. McCabe, Albert’s sister-in-law, had been out that night with Read, O’Keefe, and other members of law enforcement.

At 5:23 a.m., Read called O’Keefe again, this time sounding calmer and not angry but very concerned, Mass Live reports.

“John, where the heck are you?” jurors heard her say.

McCabe, Kerry Robertson and Read drove together in McCabe’s SUV to the Alberts’ house.

In the last voicemail she left at 6:03 a.m., Read can be heard screaming when she sees O’Keefe unresponsive in the snow. McCabe is heard calling 911 and calling her sister, whose house they were at but who did not come outside even when police and an ambulance arrived.

Read called O’Keefe 44 times over the five-hour period, left eight voicemails, and texted him dozens of times, NBC Boston reports.
