An Alabama middle school teacher is facing multiple charges after being accused of raping a middle school student.
Officers with the Opelika Police Department arrested 47-year-old Jill Campbell on April 24, according to a news release from the agency.
Her arrest came after detectives began investigating a young man’s claim that he had an “inappropriate sexual relationship” eight years prior, according to police.
In documents obtained by PEOPLE, the complaint says this “inappropriate sexual relationship” began when the alleged victim was 12 years old.
Detectives with the OPD said in their release that “the victim reported that the acts occurred when they were in 7th and 8th grade and attending Opelika Middle School.”
The two-week investigation by detectives into the allegations “revealed evidence that corroborated the victim’s statement,” the release adds.
Campbell, whose records show she has been a teacher at Opelika Middle School for over 20 years, has now been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation

Police said the school “is fully cooperating with the investigation” at this time, while Opelika City Schools confirmed in a statement that Campbell is on administrative leave.
OCS declined to comment further on the matter, citing the ongoing investigation.
The OPD also said it was the superintendent of OCS who alerted law enforcement to this alleged crime after speaking with a parent earlier this month.
Campbell has been charged with rape and sodomy in the second degree. She is out on $35,000 bail and will be back in court on May 7.
