New York City police have arrested and charged a man they say is the person caught on video sexually abusing a corpse aboard a New York City subway train earlier this month.
Felix Rojas, 44, was arrested and taken into custody on Sunday night on a first-degree rape charge, the NYPD said in a press release Monday morning.
Police allege Rojas, a resident of Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, is the man who, on April 9, was caught on CCTV footage having sex with a dead person while aboard an R train in Lower Manhattan, the outlets reported.
The victim was identified by the New York Daily News as Jorge Gonzalez, 37, after the outlet interviewed his estranged wife, who said she was shocked when she found out.
The wife, who identified herself as Teresa, met Gonzalez when she was just 15 and celebrating her quinceañera. The two married when she was 24 and moved to the U.S. to start a new life, per the outlet.
“Even though he was from the countryside he adapted to any situation,” she said to the outlet. “We could go eat a steak or a sushi at a nice place – or, at the same time, we could go to the corner and get tacos and stuff. I really couldn’t do that with other friends.”
Police say that the victim died of natural causes earlier that night at around 8 p.m., according to the New York Times, who cited the NYPD.
After seeing the man’s body, which was lying completely still, Rojas allegedly rummaged through his pockets and had sex with the body before fleeing the train, the outlet said, citing an internal police document.
