June is already an important month for knife enthusiasts, as it is during June that Blade Show takes place. But there is another reason to get excited for the mid-point of the year, as it will see the release of the USA Backcountry, a new, made-in-the-US fixed blade from Boker.

With a name like the Backcountry, you know what you’re getting here: a tough, reliable outdoors knife, no frills, just well-executed, time-tested design concepts from tip to tail. The 3.43-inch blade is probably the definitive outdoors knife shape, a drop point, with a flat grind that balances slicing performance and durability. Up on the spine you’ll notice some aggressive jimping out near the tip – something characteristic of outdoors knives, where it can provide the user extra control during detail-centric jobs like skinning.

The full tang Backcountry will be made from CPM-MagnaCut. Not only is MagnaCut popular, but it’s one of those rare steels that is a good fit for just about any use category, whether that be a mini backup EDC, or, as is the case here on the Backcountry, an outdoors piece that may encounter tough materials and rough conditions. As the benchmark for current-gen powder metallurgy knife steels, MagnaCut acquits itself with style in the classic triad of characteristics: edge holding, toughness, and stain resistance.

We’ve got an older, but certainly no less proven, material for the handle scales on the slim and sinuous Backcountry, and that’s G-10. Boker chose KnifeNews orange for the color, presumably first and foremost because it’s beautiful, but a secondary consideration may have been that it makes the knife very easy to spot should it be dropped or otherwise misplaced on treks.

The Backcountry will be available on June 30.
