Eyewitnesses who experienced the shooting on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee describe a chaotic scene unfolding after reports of shots fired circulated.

Two people were killed in the shooting, law enforcement officials said. A suspect, identified by law enforcement as Phoenix Ikner, is in custody.

Daniel Milian, a freshman at FSU, tells PEOPLE he heard the shots, initially thinking they were fireworks.

“At first it was like 2 or 3, then it kept going and I saw people from the student union start running,” Milian says. “That’s when I realized it wasn’t fireworks and I just turned around and started running the opposite way.”

“I wasn’t able to see the actual shooter or anything, but I heard at least 10-15 shots before I was able to get into a building,” Milian adds. “I was looking in the direction where it was from and I was only able to see people running.”

Milian says he was let into a residence hall and went to the dorm of his friend who he says lives in the building.

“I’d never think something like this would happen here,” Milian says.

Another freshman, Jed Hoffman, says he was in class when he started getting alerts about the active shooter.

“The class I was in was doing presentations so I wasn’t on my phone, but I still see my texts on my laptop, where I got an automatic text message from FSU saying there was a shooter,” Hoffman tells PEOPLE. “I kind of panicked but didn’t want to disrupt the presentations and wasn’t sure of the severity so I kept quiet.”

Following the presentation, Hoffman says someone in the class alerted the teacher and everyone started checking their phones for more information.

The class was subsequently placed on lockdown.

FSU has since announced that “law enforcement has neutralized the threat” and that people were free to move about areas of the campus not near the crime scene.
