The lawyer for the Hawaii anesthesiologist accused of trying to push his wife off a cliff before allegedly bashing her face with a rock says the story is more than it seems.

Gerhardt Konig, 46, was charged with second-degree attempted murder following the alleged March 24 attack on his wife, 36-year-old Arielle Konig, in Oahu, Hawaii.

He pleaded not guilty in court on Monday, April 7, according to the Associated Press.

Arielle, who survived the alleged attack, accused Gerhardt of trying to push her off a cliff, hitting her head with a rock, bashing her face and trying to inject her with an unknown substance while the Maui couple was celebrating her birthday.

Prior to Monday’s arraignment, Gerhardt’s lawyer Thomas Otake said his client’s version of events will be known soon, the AP reported.

“There are two sides to every story, and thus far only one side has been shared,” Otake said in a media statement prior to the court appearance. “The other side to this story will be shared within the court process at the appropriate time.”

Arielle, a nuclear engineer, told police the alleged attack took place when she refused to take a photo with her husband.

As the investigation unfolded, more troubling allegations followed.

In a petition for a restraining order filed days after the incident, Arielle alleged her husband had been sexually abusing her for several months prior.

She claimed he had accused her of cheating on him in December and had since begun controlling her communications.

PEOPLE has reached out to Arielle’s lawyer Brandon Segal for comment.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Segal previously said “Arielle is focusing on her recovery at home in Maui with the support of her family,” declining to provide further comment.
