Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy has been arrested in Texas.
The NFL player, 21, was arrested on a felony domestic violence charge on Friday, March 7, per Williamson County online jail records. The charge is considered a third-degree felony, according to the Texas penal code.
Records show that Worthy was charged with assault on a family or household member, committed by impeding their “normal breathing or blood circulation,” which the penal code defines as “applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth.”
“We are aware and gathering information,” a Chiefs spokesperson shared in a statement to PEOPLE on Saturday, March 8.
Worthy’s lawyers, Sam Bassett and Chip Lewis, did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
If convicted, Worthy could face a prison sentence of two to 10 years and/or a fine of up to $10,000, per the Austin-American Statesman.
Law enforcement told TMZ — which first reported the news — that Worthy was still in Williamson County jail as of Saturday morning and is being held without bail. He is also reportedly set to appear in front of a judge later in the day, the outlet said.
Worthy’s lawyers said in a statement shared with the The Houston Chronicle and The Austin-American Statesman that they “are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest” and are “working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation.”

“The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity,” Worthy’s attorneys continued. “She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.”
“We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their thorough investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence,” the lawyers added.

Worthy recently closed out his rookie season with the Chiefs at the 2025 Super Bowl in February. He was drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft as the overall 28th pick after setting the record at the NFL combine for the fastest 40-yard dash, per the Associated Press
He previously played college football for the Texas Longhorns, where he made 26 career touchdown receptions, which was third all-time in Texas history and was fourth all-time in career receiving yards, according to The Austin-American Statesman.
