A cogitively-impaired North Carolina woman vanished after getting into an strange car — and now police are looking for her killer.

Just before 10 p.m. on Sat. Jan. 4, Heather Williams, 25, was seen on her family’s Ring camera leaving her home on Berkshire Road in Fayetteville, the Fayetteville Police Department said in a statement.

She was seen getting into a light-colored sedan with a sunroof – a car her family says they don’t recognize.

Williams was considered to be endangered because she suffered from cognitive impairment with limited speech, the police department said.

Six days later, on Friday, Jan. 10, police said that they had found her body in a wooded area near Newark Ave. and State Ave. Now, her family is desperately seeking answers as to what happened to her.

“That Sunday, you know, when I woke up, she wasn’t at the house,” Williams’ sister Mary told local station ABC 11. “And, you know, we tried calling her phone. We couldn’t get up with her. It was going straight to voicemail. And like, at that point, we knew something was wrong.”

An accident in 2015 left Williams cognitively impaired, local station WRAL reports.

“Over the years, she’s worked really hard, you know, just having a normal life and do normal things that 25-year-olds do, but she was loving and she loved her family and she loved Jesus,” Mary Williams told WRAL.

As a result of her impairment, family worried about who she met out in the world — and online.

On Friday, January 10, 2025, during a follow up to the investigation of a missing and endangered person Fayetteville Police Department Detectives were led to a wooded area near Newark Ave and State Ave. There a deceased individual was located. The decedent has now been identified as Heather Williams, W/F, 25 years old. Her next of kin has been notified.

Williams’ family believes she had previously met whoever picked her up online.

“She was just so trusting and naive to what the dangers were out there,” Mary Williams said, ABC 11 reports.

Her family reported her missing when she failed to return home after they saw her getting into the car.

“Her being out there at night time alone, it was a dangerous situation for her to begin with,” Mary Williams told local station WRAL.

The family was devastated to learn she had been found dead.

“She just loved life, you know, was fearless and loved to be with family,” Mary Williams said, ABC 11 reports. “And she had a love for God that never wavered.”

The family is asking the public to come forward with any information they may have about what happened to Heather.

“I just ask that people out there, if they hear anything or if they see anything, you know, somebody knows something, somebody’s talked to somebody, somebody has, you know, they slip up along the way,” Mary Williams told WRAL. “So somebody’s got to know something. and you know, I just pray that whoever does know anything comes forward and that we’re able to get justice for Heather.”

Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact Detective E. Alrafai at 910-723-0327. To remain anonymous, please contact Crime Stoppers at 910-483-8477 or fay-nccrimestoppers.org.
